Relational Technology International

Management

RTI - (Relational Technology International Ltd) is a privately owned and operated New Zealand company.  The company directors are David Wakenshaw and David Radford.

Background

RTI was formed in March 1987 to distribute the INGRES database software. As New Zealand distributor, we provided pre and post sales support, training and education services, first line technical support and consulting and development services.

In 1988, we were appointed distributor of the CommonSense range of INGRES DBA tools. CommonSense were bought by Quest software (USA) which provides a wide range of tools and utilities for the Oracle marketplace as well as other database independent utility applications.

We quickly outgrew our offices in Vincent Street, Auckland and moved to the corner of Symonds Street and Karangahape Road. We shared the top floor of the then PAXUS (now CSC) building with Tandem Computers.

In 1991, we moved to the top floor of 369 Queen Street. This was a very central position with pleasant views into Myers Park and the central city.

Also in 1991, we opened an office in Wellington to service a growing client base in the capital city.

In 1992, we became the New Zealand distributor for the Andyne range of Data Query tools known as GQL and PaBlo. These products ran against all the standard Relational Databases including Oracle, Informix, Sybase, DB2 as well as any ODBC linked databases. Andyne is now part of Hummingbird Communications and the product range has evolved into the BI (Business Intelligence) suite.

In 1995, we discovered a new product being developed in Australia. This new product could handle 3D spatial and other complex data types and was able to integrate various data sources into an application. The product is called Fire, from Formida (since renamed Xmarc and now owned by US company PlanGraphics.) Fire is a spatial development tool which we have used to create the Land Transport Safety Authority Crash Analysis System. CAS is now owned by Land Transport New Zealand, and is used by over 350 roading engineers, local authority analysts, police and other interested parties.

Every reported car crash in New Zealand is detailed in an Oracle Database. Using the location details, and a complete NZ wide street centre-line dataset, CAS can display incidents in numerous thematic styles on a map. With lots of data, it becomes quickly apparent where the black spots are and also the types of incidents in these locations.

The LTSA CAS system went live in 1997, and has been enhanced continuously ever since, by developers at RTI.

In February 2000, we moved to our current location in Lake Road, Takapuna. As we all live on the North Shore, we have managed to save many hours of collective commuting time. We are still close to the motorway system but have a very calm and pleasant workplace.

We understand data integration, all aspects of database design and production and data security. Our skills are in data modelling, database creation and administration, data manipulation and the like. We run training courses on these subjects at regular intervals.
